The Machine: Choosing One, Threading It, and Fixing What Goes Wrong
Buying a First Machine
The market is confusing because manufacturers compete on stitch count, which is close to irrelevant. A beginner needs about four stitches: straight, zigzag, a stretch stitch, and an automatic buttonhole. A machine advertising two hundred decorative stitches uses the same mechanism to produce all of them and is not a better machine.
What actually matters:
Weight. A heavier machine with metal internal parts stays put while sewing. Very light plastic machines walk across the table at speed and vibrate, which shows up in your stitching. This single quality separates machines that are pleasant to learn on from machines that are not.
A proper foot pedal with fine control at low speed. You will spend the first month sewing slowly.
An automatic buttonhole, ideally a one-step one. Four-step buttonholes are workable; manual ones are miserable.
Adjustable stitch length and tension as physical dials or clearly labelled controls.
A solid mid-range machine from any of the established manufacturers will do everything you need for years. A serviced second-hand mechanical machine from the seventies or eighties is often a better buy than a new budget one - they were built almost entirely of metal and they last. Buy from a dealer who has serviced it, or take a private-sale machine for a service, which costs little and typically transforms it.
You do not need an overlocker. You do not need an embroidery machine. Both are excellent and both are for later.
Threading, and Why It Matters More Than Anything
The overwhelming majority of stitch problems are threading problems, and they present as symptoms that look like something else entirely - loops on the underside, snapped thread, skipped stitches, bird’s-nesting.
Two rules that resolve most of them:
Thread the machine with the presser foot up. The tension discs are open when the foot is raised and clamped shut when it is down. Thread with the foot down and the thread simply lies alongside the discs rather than between them, so it has no upper tension at all - which produces a loose tangled mess on the underside of the fabric. This is by far the most common single fault, and it looks exactly like a bobbin problem.
Follow the path on the machine itself. Every machine has the route printed or moulded onto it in numbered steps. The take-up lever - the metal arm that rises and falls above the needle - must have the thread through it, and it is the step people skip.
For the bobbin, wind it evenly and at moderate speed, use the same thread as the top, and check which direction the thread should feed out. Most machines want it running one specific way; the manual shows it. Do not use a bobbin that came with a different brand of machine even if it fits, because the height and shape differ by fractions of a millimetre and the tension will be wrong.
The Diagnostic Sequence
When stitching goes wrong, work through this in order, and do not skip ahead:
One: rethread both top and bobbin, from scratch, with the presser foot up. Do not inspect the existing threading. Take it all out and do it again. This fixes most faults on its own.
Two: change the needle. Needles are consumable and blunt faster than anyone expects - roughly every eight hours of sewing, and immediately after hitting a pin. A blunt or slightly bent needle causes skipped stitches, snagged fabric, and a distinct thumping sound. Check it is inserted fully up into the clamp and facing the correct way, which is flat side to the back on most machines.
Three: check the needle suits the fabric. A universal 80/12 handles most medium woven fabric. Jersey and knits need a ballpoint or stretch needle, which pushes between the fibres instead of piercing them, and using a sharp needle on knits produces skipped stitches and little holes. Denim and canvas want a heavier 90 or 100.
Four: clean out the bobbin area. Remove the plate, take out the bobbin case if it lifts out, and brush away the felted lint that accumulates under it. Use a brush, not compressed air, which drives lint further in. A small amount of lint under the bobbin case genuinely changes the tension.
Five, and only now: adjust tension. Top tension is the numbered dial, usually correct around 4. If loops appear on the underside, the problem is almost always the top thread not seated in the discs, not a tension setting. If loops appear on top, suspect the bobbin. Change one number at a time and test on a scrap of the actual fabric, doubled, with the actual thread.
The Small Habits
Start every seam with the needle down in the fabric, and hold both thread tails behind the foot for the first couple of stitches. This alone prevents the tangle that beginners get at the start of every seam.
Backstitch three or four stitches at each end to lock the seam, then stop. More than that just chews the fabric.
Never sew over pins. It sounds cautious and it is simply what happens when a needle strikes a pin: the needle bends or shatters, and shards move fast. Pull each pin out as it approaches the foot.
Sew slowly. The pedal has a range and the top of it is not where learning happens. Everything you are trying to control - seam allowance, curves, corners - is easier at half speed.
